Nicaragua has big plans in mind for travel and trade. The government is in the process of developing a huge project to enlarge the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (AIACS) in Managua.
It is all about opening the country to the world, more so to the new partners, such as China and Russia, starting in late 2025, through the modernization of the airport. To solve this, a Chinese building firm is extending the runway and taxiway. By mid-2027, the airport shall rise to a rating of 4E. This implies huge so-called wide-body jets such as the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350 will finally have the option of landing in Managua. These aircraft have the ability to travel much greater distances, meaning that there is no need to change planes in the middle of a flight because it can be directly non-stop to Europe and Asia, and trade must be considered to be the primary goal. Nicaragua ships goods to the tune of billions of dollars annually, and they include: Coffee and Beef, Gold, Seafood (such as shrimp and lobster), and textiles.
Now most of these goods are shipped through the sea, a slow mode. Having a larger airport, Nicaragua will be able to transport heavy and even perishable cargo by giant cargo planes straight to the markets in China. Since the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Nicaragua and China in 2023, business between the two countries has been booming. The reason It is believed that it could save the shipping companies as much as 20-30 percent of the costs to send fresh lobster to a dinner table in Asia, thus earning the airport more revenue.
Why it matters: This airport expansion is only one part of a much bigger plan. Nicaragua is also developing a second and much larger airport, known as Punta Huete, due to open in 2029. The government feels that such projects will see the country emerge as a key logistics and shipping hub in Central America. The challenges are not all smooth sailing, though. Some are concerned about the price. The funding of the project is through loans provided by the Chinese, and the nation will be forced to repay the billions of dollars in the years to come. More so, as much as the airport is being constructed to accommodate more people, the number of travelers has not increased at a high rate in the recent past. Nonetheless, the government considers this a historical move. By constructing the infrastructure, they are hoping that the business and tourism will ensue with the construction, and Nicaragua will be more autonomous and tied to the world economy.
The Challenges
It’s not all smooth flying, though. Some people worry about the cost. The project is being funded by loans from China, and the country will have to pay back billions of dollars in the coming years. Also, while the airport is being built to hold more people, the actual number of travelers hasn’t grown very fast lately.
Despite these hurdles, the government sees this as a “historical move.” They are betting that by building the infrastructure now, the business and tourism will follow, making Nicaragua more independent and connected to the global economy.
